Read on to discover what cake makers are predicting will be the new wedding cake trends for 2025.

1. Lambeth Piping

This traditional style of piping has had an upgrade for 2025. Vintage style wedding cakes with intricate piped details such as scrolls and garlands have ‘come back with a bang’ according to Becky Bronsetein of Fern & Rose, but with a modern twist.

“It’s all about the sleek, sophisticated white finish with a touch of colour for decoration,” says Becky. “Instead of the cherries on top, I’m seeing something a little different like small red sugar hearts or big sugar pearls.”

Traditionally, Lambeth piping was done with Royal icing, but Claire Davey of Cake Daydreams is seeing couples choose a softer finish using buttercream instead. And, rather than the bold tones of traditional cakes, colours are more muted giving the Lambeth cake a fresh feel.

2. Semi-Naked Wedding Cakes

In contrast to the intricate Lambeth piping style, some couples are also choosing to stick with the semi-naked wedding cake trend for 2025, again with a new twist.

“I can’t see the popularity of the beautifully simple semi-naked cakes, decorated with fresh flowers, disappearing any time soon,” says Frances Duhig of Cut Above Cake Company.  “However, there has been a move away from rustic cakes with more couples choosing elaborately decorated iced cakes with sugar flowers and textured or sculptural elements, like torn icing.”

3. Texture on Texture

Something that all of our cake experts agree on is that contrasting textures are set to be a big wedding cake trend for 2025. Wedding cakes that are sculpted using a palette knife are always popular – pretty, whimsical and romantic – but Becky is seeing that couples now want to add drama to the design with striking features – contrasting textures using fresh flowers, sugar decorations and even rice paper ‘sails’ (more on that below).

“Texture is a big thing for 2025 wedding cakes,” agrees Claire, whose most popular designs are still all white, but include textural details to add interest and drama.

4. Fresh Flowers

Fresh flowers are a key wedding cake trend for 2025

Picking up on the texture trend, fresh flowers on wedding cakes are blooming – literally! Fresh floral arrangements are everywhere for 2025, and the bigger the blooms the better. “Instead of having a neat, pretty, pristine floral arrangement, I see couples wanting a bit of drama and having quite an organic, un-uniform, almost ‘messy’ floral arrangement,” says Becky.

She also predicts that traditional colours such as green and white florals will become less popular in favour of coloured flowers. “This against a textured background will be bringing the drama to their wedding day.”

5. Edible Wafer Sails

One of the newer wedding cake trends for 2025 is decorating a cake with ‘sails’ made from rice paper for an ethereal,, dramatic effect.  “I am finding that wafer paper designs are an emerging wedding cake trend for 2025,” says Claire.  “Edible wafer paper as a medium for cakes is fantastic – it is more and more being used to create textural designs on wedding cakes which gives them a lovely romantic but modern look.”

Wafer paper designs can be used to add colour and textural details to the finished cake but can also be used as an icing finish to give the cake a delicate, other worldly effect.

6. Black and Gold Cakes

The popularity of ivory wedding cakes will never go away, but our cake makers are also seeing requests for bolder colours. “Although we will continue to see fabulous all-ivory cakes, I think that there is a growing trend for black or very dark coloured icing, often highlighted with gold decoration,” says Frances. One of her designs includes a black wedding cake highlighted with gold detailing and softened with black cake lace to create a textural effect.

Becky is also seeing more gold accents on wedding cakes. “A touch of gold will always win,” she says. “Couples love a bit of sparkle on their day, and I don’t think this trend will ever die. It’s a safe design but you can’t beat it.”

7. Elegant Silhouettes

Wedding cakes are often recognisable for their towering tiers and this tall and elegant silhouette is not going away any time soon. In fact, the higher the better, according to Frances. “Many couples will continue to opt for two-tier cakes, usually with one or both tiers made extra high,” she says. “As for the general outline of cakes, most are going to be tall and narrow with extra-high tiers creating an elegant silhouette.”

The beauty about this type of design is that they suit smaller weddings but  can also be sized up for larger weddings where there are greater numbers of guests.

8. Wedding Cake Personalisation

“A wedding cake trend that I think is becoming popular and is going to continue into 2025 is having ‘just married’ piped on top of the cake,” says Becky. “This adds a cute personal touch for the couple.”

Wedding cake flavours in 2025 are also going personal with couples veering away from traditional fruit cake to select more popular choices. Claire is seeing more requests for her Orange and Honey wedding cake while Black Velvet Chocolate and Guinness is the most requested wedding cake flavour at Cut Above Cake Company. Raspberry and White Chocolate wedding cakes are popular across the board, and Chocolate Fudge is also a perennial favourite.
