Arriving in style – unique wedding transport ideas

Whether it’s the arrival of the bride or the ‘getaway car’ for after, wedding transport has always been a big part of any wedding celebration. Whether you go for the traditional limousine or something more quirky, the thing to remember when deciding on your wedding transport is that you are in the driving seat…

Who travels in wedding cars?

Traditionally, wedding cars have been used to transport the bridal party to and from the church or ceremony. This includes the bridesmaids, the mother-of-the-bride, the groomsmen and any other immediate family members. However, today, many people use their own vehicles and the wedding transport is reserved for the bride and whoever is walking her down the aisle.

Wedding cars also have a starring role after the ceremony. One of the most eagerly anticipated moments is the arrival of the  ‘getaway car’ that the bride and groom use to get to the reception. Depending on the location of the venue, there will often be some form of transportation put on for guests too.

How to decorate a wedding car

Hearing the jangle of cans scraping along the road with a handmade ‘Just married’ sign in the back window were once the customary signs that someone had just tied the knot. There are many theories about why wedding cars are decorated with tin cans, from warding off evil spirits to bringing good luck. But one of the simplest ideas is that they just create a lot of noise, alerting passersby to the wonderful union that has just taken place.

Ribbons are another traditional way to decorate wedding cars, and seeing cars bedecked with pretty ribbons is always a welcome sight on the roads. Thankfully, it’s a much quieter way of encouraging people to join in the celebrations than tin cans!

Whether you go for something traditional or not when you decorate a wedding car, it’s important to make sure that the car remains road legal and that the decorations do not present a hindrance to the driver. It is also important to check that whatever decorations you add to your wedding car do not damage the paintwork or the engine in any way.

What are some wedding transport ideas?

At Lapstone Barn, we’ve seen some wonderful forms of wedding transport rolling up our driveway. More than ever, couples are choosing to make a statement with their choice of wedding car, using forms of transport that are meaningful and personal to them.

For example, one couple at Lapstone Barn used a tractor in their celebrations because the groom worked in agricultural machinery. Another couple arrived with a fleet of fire engines as the groom was a member of the fire brigade. We’ve had couples take off in helicopters, Landrover Defenders, Fiat 500s and even a Citroen 2CV with the roof down! In the more traditional vein, we’ve welcomed couples in classic Aston Martins, Rolls Royces, and old charabanc buses.

More and more couples are choosing unique wedding transport ideas as a way of putting their own stamp on a wedding. And it’s something we really encourage here at Lapstone Barn as it gives the day an extra special touch – and looks great in those all important wedding photos!
