Best wedding cake flavours for 2026

From the first tasting to that magical moment when you slice into it together, your wedding cake is one of the sweetest parts of your celebrations – literally!

At Lapstone Barn, we’ve been lucky enough to see some truly breathtaking cakes grace our Cotswold barn wedding venue, each one as unique as the couple cutting it. While classic wedding cake flavours will always have their place, 2026 is set to bring an exciting mix of nostalgic desserts, luxurious ingredients, and fresh, fruit combinations that promise to delight your guests.

We caught up with some of our talented cake suppliers to see what’s likely to rise to the top in 2026. Whether you’re a fan of timeless vanilla, crave something indulgent and chocolatey, or fancy a fun twist on tradition, here are some wedding cake flavour ideas for every couple…

The classics we’ll never stop loving

Prefer to play it safe with some tried-and-tested favourites? We don’t blame you! Popular wedding cake flavours like vanilla with berry jam, white chocolate and raspberry, and zesty lemon are firm favourites year after year. Their light, crowd-pleasing profiles are perfect for every season and pair beautifully with most fillings and frostings.

But these classics are far from boring. Some of our suppliers have been elevating them with clever twists, like vanilla and mango for a subtle tropical touch, or lemon and blueberry for a fresh, summery feel. There’s also a growing love for a simple yet perfectly executed vanilla bean sponge, described by Samantha from The Pretty Cake Company as “like a good vanilla ice cream”.

Indulgent and comforting favourites

As much as we adore citrus and fruity flavours, we can’t deny that there’s something irresistible about a rich, indulgent sponge. Sticky toffee, banoffee, and chocolate fudge cakes are making waves this year, proving that decadent flavours can still be elegant when paired with the right design.

Many of our suppliers are whipping up rich, fudge chocolate cakes that instantly bring a smile to your face (think the famous chocolate cake from Matilda!). Chocolate and salted caramel has also been a popular flavour combination – perfect for all you chocoholics out there! But if you’re looking for something a little more grown-up, Carly from Carly Cakes says coffee and salted pecan is tipped to be one of 2026’s surprise hits, taking a sophisticated twist on the classic coffee and walnut.

Fruity, floral, and retro

Fresh and fruity flavours will continue to shine for 2026 spring and summer weddings. Alongside the beloved lemon drizzle and elderflower, our suppliers have also been experimenting with light, fragrant ingredients like orange and honey. Claire from Cake Daydreams has been busy whipping up “an orange-soaked sponge with a layer of honey and white chocolate buttercream” for the perfect balance of sweetness and zest, alongside her popular prosecco and passionfruit flavour cakes.

Becky from Fern & Rose is seeing more couples drawn to nostalgic British desserts. She says that black forest is a popular wedding cake flavour for 2026, with its chocolate sponge and boozy cherries capturing hearts (and tastebuds) all over again. If you’ve got a soft spot for retro flavours, cherry bakewell, trifle, and even vanilla sprinkle cake are all on the horizon for this year – a playful nod to childhood desserts that have been beautifully reimagined for weddings.

The rise of pistachio (and other adventurous flavours)

All of our cake makers agree that pistachio is one of the main 2026 wedding cake flavours on everyone’s lips. Once reserved for patisserie counters, this sophisticated nut is now taking centre stage, appearing in adventurous combinations like pistachio and sour cherry, pistachio and chocolate, and pistachio, rose water, and strawberry. Its subtle earthiness adds a refined edge to traditional wedding bakes, making it ideal for couples who are looking for wedding cake flavour ideas that are a little different.

One very different wedding cake flavour for 2026 that Pia of Vanilla Pod Bakery has taken for 2026 is Ube cake, a vibrant purple sponge that’s made from Filipino yam. It’s beautiful and unique, bringing both colour and curiosity to your cake table. We can’t wait to see more bold choices like these appearing at Lapstone Barn in 2026!

A flavour for every season

With so many wedding cake flavours to choose from, you’re sure to find one that perfectly complements the season and style of your celebration. A lemon and elderflower sponge works beautifully for a spring garden wedding, while vanilla and mango offers a burst of sunshine for summer. Chocolate fudge and sticky toffee feels wonderfully cosy for autumnal receptions, with orange and honey bringing warmth to winter celebrations.

But you don’t just have to settle for one flavour! Many couples are now choosing multiple flavours across their tiers to please all their guests. For example, you could combine a classic vanilla base with a fruity middle and a chocolatey top tier for a cake that truly tells your story in flavour.
