10 tips for timeless Cotswold wedding photography
1. Focus on people, not trends

The images couples treasure most are rarely the staged ones. A stiff line-up can look polished in the moment but feel hollow years later. The ones people print and frame are almost always the ones nobody planned.

3. Think carefully about editing style
Editing trends move faster than almost any other element of wedding photography – and they can date your images significantly if you are not careful. Ask to see a photographer’s full galleries, not just the highlight images they post on social media.
“A good example is the burnt orange and brown editing trend that became very popular a few years ago. Weddings photographed in spring or summer were made to look like they had taken place in autumn, with many of the beautiful natural colours removed. Couples invest so much in colourful flowers and carefully chosen décor – those details are part of the story of the day. When editing becomes too trend-driven, those elements can be lost, and the images tend to date much more quickly.”

4. Seek out beautiful natural light
The Cotswolds is extraordinarily photogenic – the quality of the light at golden hour on a summer evening is something that simply cannot be replicated in a studio. A photographer who knows how to use it will make an enormous difference to your gallery.
“Light is everything in photography. Whenever possible I love to sneak away with my couples for a few minutes during sunset. The soft evening light creates the most flattering, romantic portraits without feeling overly styled or dramatic. Decent light has never gone out of fashion, and it never will.”

5. Don’t build your whole day around social media trends
Pinterest boards and Instagram feeds are useful for gathering ideas, but the most photographed wedding moments right now will also be the most recognisable in five years’ time – as belonging firmly to this era. Your photographer should be documenting your day, not recreating someone else’s.
“Social media has undoubtedly influenced wedding photography, creating trends that can be fun and visually striking. There’s nothing wrong with embracing those trends, but I’d always recommend keeping them to a small part of your wedding gallery rather than building your entire photography style around them. Trends come and go very quickly.”

6. Use simple, uncluttered backgrounds

The Cotswolds offers some of the most naturally beautiful backdrops in England – honey-stone walls, open countryside, elegant interiors, ancient doorways. A good photographer will know where to find them and how to use them.

7. Make sure the people who matter are captured
This is the one couples often say they wish they had thought about more carefully. Before the day, share a list of the people who are most important to you – not just for group shots, but so your photographer knows who to look for during the quiet moments.
“Some of the most meaningful photographs become the ones you never expected – your grandparents holding hands during the ceremony, your dad wiping away a tear, your best pal laughing during the speeches. No one has ever said ‘I wish we had more photos of the food’. It’s the photographs of the people you love that become priceless over time.”

8. Ask about black and white
Not every image needs to be in colour. Black and white strips away distraction and lets the emotion speak – and it has looked elegant since photography began.
“I love delivering a selection of black and white images as well as colour. Removing colour allows the emotion to take centre stage, creating photographs that feel elegant, timeless and full of feeling. Some moments simply work better in black and white, and those images often become family favourites.”

9. Embrace the era a little – that’s part of the joy

This is perhaps the most reassuring perspective of all. Your photographs will reflect when they were taken – and that is not a bad thing. What you want to avoid is photographs that feel tired after just a few years; photographs that capture something genuine will only become more precious with time.
“Looking back through our parents’ or grandparents’ wedding albums is part of the joy – they’re a wonderful snapshot of a moment in time, and it’s heartwarming and fun to see how styles, fashions and traditions have changed. What couples generally want to avoid is photographs that feel dated after only a few years. Genuine moments, real emotions and honest interactions never go out of style because they’re a true reflection of the day.”

10. Relax, and trust the person you chose
